How to fix the STOP: 0x00000077 or Stop 0x77 or KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR

Stop errors (blue screen) in Windows

Stop errors (also called blue screen errors or blue screen of death errors) are the most severe errors Windows can encounter. They occur if a serious problem causes your Windows system to shut down or restart unexpectedly. You might see a message that says "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer".

These errors can be caused by both hardware and software issues, and it can be difficult to troubleshoot the problem. In reality, the most common cause of blue screen errors is a device driver problem. Outdated, incorrect or corrupt drivers can cause the system to encounter a Stop error. You can use a driver update program to check, find, download and update all device drivers automatically.

The following tools and methods can also help you get Windows up and running again.

What is the KERNEL STACK INPAGE ERROR

The KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR bug check has a value of 0x00000077. This bug check indicates that the requested page of kernel data from the paging file could not be read into memory.

The problem can be due to disk hardware failure, disk data corruption, or possible virus infection.

Interpreting the message

This Stop message has four parameters. The following definitions apply only if the first and third parameters are both zero:
  1. This value is 0x00 (zero).
  2. Value found in the stack.
  3. This value is 0x00 (zero).
  4. Address of signature on the kernel stack.
Otherwise, the following definitions apply:
  1. Status code.
  2. I/O status code.
  3. Page file number.
  4. Offset into page file.
Frequently, you can determine the exact cause of this error from the second parameter, the I/O status code. Some common status codes include the following:
  • 0xC000009A, or STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES, indicates a lack of nonpaged pool resources.
  • 0xC000009C, or STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR, indicates bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk.
  • 0xC000009D, or STATUS_DEVICE_NOT_CONNECTED, indicates defective or loose cabling, termination, or that the controller does not see the hard disk drive.
  • 0xC000016A, or STATUS_DISK_OPERATION_FAILED, also indicates bad blocks (sectors) on the hard disk.
  • 0xC0000185, or STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR, indicates improper termination, defective storage controller hardware, defective disk cabling, or that two devices are trying to use the same system resources.

Fix the KERNEL STACK INPAGE ERROR

The following suggestions can help you resolve the KERNEL STACK INPAGE ERROR:

Bad block:
If you can restart the computer after the error, Autochk runs automatically and attempts to map the bad sector to prevent it from being used anymore. If Autochk does not scan the hard disk for errors, you can manually start the disk scanner. Run Chkdsk /f /r on the system partition. You must restart the computer before the disk scan begins. If you cannot start the system because the error, use the Recovery Console and run Chkdsk /r.

Hard disk:
If the I/O status is 0xC0000185 and the paging file is on a SCSI disk, check the disk cabling and SCSI termination issues.

Memory:
If you added new memory hardware recently, such as memory modules, L2 SRAM cache, or video adapter RAM, remove and replace the hardware to determine whether it is causing or contributing to the problem. Run Windows Memory Diagnostics to determine whether the feature has failed.

Virus infection:
All Windows file systems can be infected by viruses. Check your computer for viruses by using an up-to-date virus scanning software that examines the Master Boot Record of the hard disk.
